Officer Krawetz is guilty of felony battery

LINCOLN – Lincoln Police Officer Edward Krawetz was found guilty of felony battery late Monday morning in Superior Court.

Judge Edward Clifton handed down his ruling after hearing a week of testimony earlier this month.

Town Administrator T. Joseph Almond said in a statement that in accordance with Law Enforcement Officer's Bill of Rights, "the town will implement a termination of Officer Krawetz," who has been on unpaid leave since the assault at Twin River in 2009. Security cameras captured the image of Krawetz kicking in the head a hand-cuffed, intoxicated woman who was under arrest.

In the event of an appeal, Almond said, Krawetz will stay on unpaid suspension and the town will continue to seek his termination.

Almond said the incident "was inexcusable and violates the stringent professional standards by which all officers of the Lincoln Police Department are held....The Town of Lincoln is satisfied that justice was served by a criminal conviction in this matter."

He thanked the officers who testified at the trial, and the Rhode Island State Police and the Department of Attorney General for "conducting a fair and professional investigation."

Almond concluded: "The town recognizes that this has been a horrific experience for the victim, as well as, a very difficult time for the police department and the officer’s family. However, Lincoln’s residents and all those we serve can be assured that the Lincoln Police Department, along with its police officers, is committed to the highest standards of professional conduct. I remain confident that the excellent reputation of the dedicated, honest, and hard working men and women of the Lincoln Police Department will overcome this unfortunate incident."
