Town Council considers 'toters' for trash and recycling

SMITHFIELD - The Town Council over the next several weeks will make a decision that could change the course of domestic subculture here: how garbage and recyclables are collected at the curb.

At issue is whether pickup should remain as is or become automated, in which case householders would be introduced to a new contraption, the "universal rollout cart."

The thick-ply, 65-gallon carts - essentially plastic garbage cans on steroids - would be distributed free, two to a household starting later this year, with one for garbage bags and one for recyclable cans, bottles, and paper.

The wheeled carts are designed to be lifted and emptied automatically by trucks that operate similar to those that service Dumpsters.
