'Poets and Players' at Mixed Magic this weekend

PAWTUCKET - Mixed Magic Theatre presents "Poets and Players: Great Poetry and Great Music" on Saturday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 7 at 3 p.m., in the theater at Hope Artiste Village, 999 Main St.

Performing will be Rhode Island Poet Laureate Rick Benjamin, actor and author Ricardo Pitts-Wiley, pianist Paul Bisch, and bassist Mibbit Threats.

According to a press announcement, "When poet Rick Benjamin and actor Ricardo Pitts-Wiley get together to perform, they have one goal. They both want to put an electric charge into the language and images of poetry so that it flies off the page to find life in the air and the ears of the listener. Together with accents of jazz improvisation they want to make the work of poets, both great and not-so-well known, an accessible and active experience."

The poets they read range from Rumi to Lucille Clifton, from Shakespeare to Tupac, from Langston Hughes to Mark Doty, and Benjamin and Pitts-Wiley intertwine some poems to give them new meaning and untangle others to reveal a deeper understanding.
