Calvin, Emmanuel churches greet new pastors

CUMBERLAND - Two congregations in Cumberland have welcomed new pastors who were both ordained after working for decades in other careers.

The Rev. Paulo de Tarso Rangel Ribeiro, the interim pastor at Calvin Presbyterian Church, was a law professor. Emmanuel Episcopal Church's new pastor, the Rev. Joan Testin, taught music, social studies, religion and drama for 23 years.

The pastors, who were both raised Roman Catholic, support progressive thought.

Calvin's divorce support group is the only of its kind in the area, Ribeiro said. And Testin, who has been in a relationship with her partner, Barbara Mooney, for 25 years, supports the Episcopalian church's ruling that "all relationships based on love and mutual fidelity are holy" and that civil unions can be blessed.
