Council subcommittee to review bids for proposed trash collection changes

SMITHFIELD - Events today and tomorrow will help determine whether the town makes a major change in the way domestic garbage and recyclables are collected each week.

Bids were to be opened at 10 a.m. today for municipal purchase of wheeled, 65-gallon receptacles that would be distributed free to each household. They would be lifted and emptied automatically by trucks similar to those that service Dumpsters.

Each dwelling would receive two of the polyethylene barrels, one for garbage and one for recyclables.

At 2 p.m. tomorrow in Town Hall, a Town Council subcommittee headed by Councilor Maxine Cavanagh will review the bids, and seems poised - if the price is right - to recommend the new system to the full council for action at its April 16 meeting.
