Varieur students, Peapod help out 'Backpacks to Fight Hunger' campaign

PAWTUCKET - Fifth-grade students from Varieur Elementary School teamed up with representatives from online grocer Peapod on April 4 to deliver $300 worth of food to the "Backpacks to Fight Hunger" campaign, headquartered at Jenks Junior High School.

"The kids were great. In addition to the food they ordered from Peapod, they brought their own personal contributions of canned goods, toothbrushes and money," said Joanne Bonollo, a Pawtucket School Committee member who is heading up the initiative.

"They are simply awesome," added Bonollo. "It's nice to see civic responsibility and compassion from our young students."
