No. Smithfield Budget Committee analysis calls for major school funding changes

NORTH SMITHFIELD - Budget Committee members, who say they delved into budgetary documents in a manner described as "far more thorough" than in years past, are saying the School Department is "cushioning" its budget with several hundreds of thousands of dollars in unreported revenues.

That's led the Budget Committee to recommend that the town deny the school district's request for a 4 percent increase in the local appropriation, saying that the department hasn't provided enough information to determine the appropriate amount of funding.

And it's suggesting major changes in the way that schools receive money, including moving sports program funding to the municipal side to protect it, the board says, from resulting budget-cutting backlash.
