Pawtucket residents, beware of 'flimflam' hoax

PAWTUCKET - The Pawtucket Police Department has received several complaints reporting a type of "flimflam phone hoax" scam.

Victims have been contacted on their phone by a caller telling them that one of their relatives has been involved in an accident. The caller demands cash payment for the repairs and instructs the victim to pay as soon as possible, according to a news release. The caller also mentions that the victim’s relative is being held hostage in lieu of payment, further stating that if payment is not received or if the police are contacted, the relative will be harmed.

Police are informing the public that calls of this nature are being made to area residents. If a victim has caller ID, the phone number of the person making the call will be very helpful to the investigation.

Anyone who has been solicited in this way or has more information is asked to call the Pawtucket Police Department at 401-727-9100.
