Cumberland florist 'Uncle Ronnie' dies at 75

CUMBERLAND - Ronnie Heffernan, who was better known around town as "Uncle Ronnie," died on Wednesday morning. He was 75.

The lifelong Cumberland resident owned Uncle Ronnie's Flower Shop on Mendon Road for more than 45 years before transferring ownership to his niece, Karen Mitchell, last summer.

In April, he was named Grand Marshal of the 87th annual Arnold Mills Fourth of July Parade.

Over the course of his life, Heffernan decorated countless parade floats, but perhaps the most celebrated was the one that took home first prize in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif.

He was also one of the founding members of the Cumberland Crime Stoppers organization.

In speaking with The Breeze last month, Heffernan said he loved giving back to the community and friends who have supported him throughout the years.

"My motto is: Stay in Cumberland and help everybody out," he said.
