MITHFIELD - It may be the national pastime, but residents along Wampum Trail told the Town Council last week that baseball is destroying their ability to enjoy their homes.

They live on a street that parallels the third base and left field lines of the Deerfield Park Little League Field, and they were protesting the league's plan to install a 30- by 55-foot batting cage between their houses and the diamond.

Their complaints produced a two-hour council workshop April 30 that turned into a standoff between residents and league officials, and ended up requiring extra innings: The council said it would address the matter again at its meeting this past Tuesday, which took place after the Valley Breeze & Observer deadline.
