Former owner returns to Pamfilio's with 'rock star crew'

CUMBERLAND - Much to the delight of customers who have come to know him as a friend, Rich Paolo is back at Pamfilio's Italian Deli & Catering.

The North Attleboro, Mass., resident owned the Italian deli at 1800 Mendon Road for almost a decade before selling it in 2011. He took more than a year off for personal reasons, but bought the business back last October.

Customers noticed his absence, he said, and told him about Pamfilio's experiences that missed the mark on the value he once took pride in.

It was "disheartening," he said. "I had a lot of fixing to do."

So Paolo came back, and he brought his dream team.

His sister Gina Fligg is the general manager. Chef Brian Meier has led kitchens at restaurants such as Al Forno, Bacaro and Trattoria Simpatico. Pastry Chef Lisa Aguier, who has experience baking for Mill's Tavern in Providence, whips up Pamfilio's fresh desserts.

"I've got the rock star crew right now," Paolo said. "The old crew is back."

Staff is only one of the changes. In addition to its updated take-out and deli menu of sandwiches, salads and grilled pizzas, Pamfilio's will now offer gourmet dine-in dinners with table service.

"Everything we make here is from scratch," Paolo said, including breads, pizza dough, gnocchi and desserts.

Delivery of foods from both the take-out and dinner menu is also available to Cumberland, Lincoln and parts of Woonsocket. Online ordering is coming soon.

D?©cor has also changed. Booth seating along the walls was installed, and dark wood tables and chairs replaced the plastic and metal furniture. Half of a two-wall mural has already been completed.

Dinner, which started two weeks ago, blends a family-friendly atmosphere, where kids are encouraged to color on the white paper table covers and grab a toy from the treasure chest for good behavior, with food and a "New York kind of vibe" that adults will enjoy.

The restaurant also has a license to serve beer and wine.

"It's big city dining without the hassle," he said, noting that parking is free and meals cost a fraction of their Federal Hill counterparts. "It's a Ritz Carlton experience on a Hampton Inn budget."

Counter service will still be available for take-out while dinner is being served.

Pamfilio's offers catering to parties of any size. Clients that use Pamfilio's catering exclusively include six hotels and several area colleges, Paolo said.

"We're one of the top caterers in northern Rhode Island," Paolo said. "You can rely on us. You can set your watch by us."

Organizations can also host fundraising dinners at the restaurant, which will give back 10 percent of sales from diners brought in by the promotion.

"We're trying to become an integral part of the community," Paolo said.

Pamfilio's is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Dinner service is offered from 5 to 9 p.m. Delivery is offered Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
