Townwide yard sale coming to Cumberland on June 1

Proceeds to benefit July 4th parade

CUMBERLAND - Founded in 1927 as a fundraiser for the North Cumberland Fire District, the Arnold Mills 4th of July Parade is so costly - some $30,000 to cover bands and entertainers - that these days it needs a fundraiser of its own.

Passing the bucket down Nate Whipple Highway on parade day, and even direct solicitations to residents' homes, just isn't enough to cover the costs.

With that big bill hanging over their heads, board members, including Kathy Dennen, say fundraising seems more and more stressful every year.

This year, she's suggesting a new approach to filling the kitty.

She's challenging residents across the town, and perhaps the region, to all hold yard sales on Saturday, June 1, beginning at 9 a.m., and then donate all or a portion of the proceeds to the parade committee.

Dennen says the plan will also shift the fund-raising to residents and away from the local businesses that are approached year after year.

For flea market aficionados, the plan seems to offer a day-long opportunity for poking around neighborhood after neighborhood in search of the treasures that others are casting out for cheap.

Dennen suggests some residents who'd prefer not to hold their own sale can help out by simply donating items for sale at a friend's yard sale.

Dennen is also accepting donations to sell that day at her house at 8 Ethier Way off Angell Road, which is shaping up to be one of the can't-miss houses on that day's yard sale route.

She said she's not suggesting one central location for the yard sale because some find it difficult to transport their items for sale.

The Valley Breeze will run a complete list of the participating addresses in the May 23 Cumberland-Lincoln edition and online at valleybreeze.com .

To participate, contact Dennen at 401-440-0225.

Shoppers who have money left over at the end of this bargain hunter's dream day might drop the cash in an envelope and send it to the committee at Arnold Mills Parade Associaton, PO Box 7473, Cumberland RI 02864.

With the 4th falling on a Thursday this year, all the events will be held on that day.
