House passes Woonsocket tax bill

WOONSOCKET – By a vote of 65-6, the state House of Representatives has approved legislation authorizing the city of Woonsocket to collect $2.5 million in additional taxes before the end of the fiscal year July 1.

The bill would allow the state-appointed Budget Commission running the city to raise about $1 million in a special residential real estate tax bill and about $1.5 million through a special charge on motor vehicles. It would exempt owner-occupied houses and condominium units from the supplemental tax.

Similar legislation has passed the Senate, but before the chambers exchange their bills, Woonsocket’s legislative delegation has requested a briefing from the city’s state-appointed budget commission on the progress made on the balance of its five-year plan for fiscal solvency.
