Man arrested for beating ex-boxer

PAWTUCKET – Rafael Torres, a man wanted for the severe beating of a homeless ex-boxer a month ago, was identified and arrested last week.

On May 18, at approximately 4:15 a.m., John Simms was found severely beaten at 8 Summer St. Simms, who had suffered serious injuries to his face and body, had taken a drink from his assailant’s bottle of vodka, according to police.

After a lengthy investigation by the Pawtucket Police Department, police say they identified Torres, age 38, of 82 Sabin St. Pawtucket, as the suspect in the beating. On June 19, detectives found Torres on Dexter Street and took him into custody.

Torres was held and was brought before the District Court of the State of Rhode Island and charged with felony assault. Bail was set at $20,000 with surety.
