DOH approves affiliation of Memorial, Care New England

PROVIDENCE - Michael Fine, director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, announced on Wednesday, June 26, that his department rendered two decisions that will make way for the affiliation of Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island and Care New England Health System.

The DOH approved both the Change in Effective Control application, which was recommended for approval on June 25 by the Health Services Council, and the Hospital Conversion application. Both applications were approved with conditions.

“Department of Health staff has worked diligently to review these applications quickly and thoroughly,” said Dr. Fine. “After completing its review, the Department of Health has determined that the criteria for approval of these applications have been met.”

The measures must still be approved by the Office of the Attorney General, which has until next Wednesday, July 3, to make a decision.

The full decisions and the report of the Health Services Council can be found under “Completed Decisions” in the right column on the Hospital Mergers and Conversions page at www.health.ri.gov.
