Black bear sightings in northern R.I.

This black bear was reportedly seen in Smithfield on Saturday, June 29, in the area of the Smithfield Police Station.

SMITHFIELD – Local towns and police departments are warning residents about area black bear sightings that have occurred over the last several days.

The town of Smithfield reported a sighting of a large black bear on June 29, in the area near the Smithfield Police Station.

The Scituate Police Department has also reported sightings of a large black bear in various ares of Scituate, including the area of Rocky Hill Road.

Officials say reported sightings began coming in from various northern Rhode Island communities last week.

Residents are asked to use caution during outdoor activities and to not approach or feed a bear.
