Two Galaxie restaurants will operate within 500 feet

NORTH PROVIDENCE - The original Jacky's Galaxie at 1449 Mineral Spring Ave. will remain open when a new version of the restaurant opens just up the road later this year, according to the owner of the popular local chain known for its Asian food.

Owner Jacky Ko told The Breeze he expects to open his new Jacky's restaurant, located about one-tenth of a mile away from the current one, by November. The new restaurant is being built at the former Julio's Restaurant space at 1488 Mineral Spring Ave.

Ko said in an email that his lease for the original Jacky's at 1449 Mineral Spring Ave. will not be expiring by November, giving him added reason to keep both restaurants open.

"We want to see how it is going after we open the new Jacky's," he said. "Then we will decide if we want to stay or not."

The new North Providence Jacky's Galaxie "will offer a different menu anyway," according to Ko, with a "more upscale" menu "plus eastern and western cuisines" for the banquet menu. More details will be announced as the time to open the new restaurant gets closer, according to Ko.

It was not immediately clear when the current lease at 1449 Mineral Spring Ave. will expire.

Ko is performing a complete gutting and rebuild of the former Italian restaurant previously run by Julio and Yolanda Marcolivio for 48 years. Ko, owner of Jacky's Galaxie restaurants in North Providence, Cumberland and Bristol, as well as Jacky's Waterplace in Providence, purchased the Julio's property for $610,000 in January.

The Breeze reported last September that Julio's was closing after Julio Marcolivio said he reached a deal to sell the property following the death of his wife.

Jacky's Galaxie offers classic and contemporary Asian cuisines including Chinese, Japanese, Cambodian, Thai and Vietnamese foods, among others.
