Woonsocket Hamlet Avenue bridge to undergo repair, restrictions in effect

WOONSOCKET – The Hamlet Avenue bridge, which carries Route 122 (Hamlet Avenue) over the Blackstone River in Woonsocket, is undergoing repairs due to a deteriorated bridge joint according to a press release from the Department of Transportation.

As a result, the two left-turn only lanes at the intersection of Hamlet Avenue and Cumberland Street have been shortened. Drivers can expect delays and trucks are advised to take Route 99 to bypass the bridge.

The restrictions went into effect on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 and will apply to the area between Davison Avenue/Florence Drive to the west and Cumberland Street/Cumberland Hill Road to the east.

Construction to replace the bridge joints is scheduled to begin in Summer 2014. According to the DOT however, lane restrictions may be lifted prior to this point. The bridge was built in 1959 and carries approximately 20,000 vehicles per day.
