North Star Select 2005 Mites split

WOONSOCKET - The Woonsocket North Stars Mite A 2005 Select team began its 2013-14 season and title defense campaign with a pair of contests last weekend at Adelard Arena.

Mixed results were in store in the Eastern Minor Hockey League games. The North Stars got off the block in stellar fashion on Saturday afternoon with a 10-0 whitewashing of the New England Jr. Flyers of Enfield, Conn.

The 35-shot attack was constant throughout the game with the North Stars scoring three times in the first period, three in the second, and four more in the third period. Leading the way for the North Stars was Thomas Balducci. The puck kept finding his stick all afternoon and he cashed in with a hat trick and two assists. Owen Leighton added two goals. Philip Barrett opened the scoring for the North Stars just 18 seconds into the game.

Other goal scorers were Cole Vieira, Sean Taylor, Logan Whitton and Christian Vieira. Ian Pomfret was perfect in net, stopping all 10 shots he faced.

Sunday afternoon fared differently for Mite A as they took on The Jr. Bull Dogs Blue of North Billerica, Mass. Ian Pomfret had all he could handle in this contest against the high-powered Jr. Dogs offense. He made some great saves but the Dogs were relentless in coming away with an 11-1 victory.

Cole Vieira had the only goal for the North Stars.
