NPHS girls win three

NORTH PROVIDENCE - The North Providence High School girls soccer team posted is first two wins of the season last week, both shutouts.

The Lady Cougars, who lost their first match of the season, 1-0 to Moses Brown, rebounded with a 3-0 win over Tolman and then pasted Woonsocket High School.

The team later played a non-league game against Central Falls and came away with a huge 9-0 win.

North Providence got out to a 1-0 lead at half against Tolman in what was a defensive battle, but pulled away with a pair of scores in the second half.

Finding the back of the net for North Providence were Ariana Africo, Olivia Capraro and Amber Russell.

While the score was close, North Providence dominated the game and put 14 shots on the Tolman goal while Cougar keeper Ashley VanBemmelen was only called upon to make one save.

It was no contest against Woonsocket as North Providence limited the Villa Novans to a single shot on net.

The Lady Cougars moved out to a 3-0 lead at half and never looked back. Capraro popped in a pair of goals for North Providence and adding single scores were Africo, Victoria Threshler and Maddie Tallecao. Africo picked up three assists, and Threshler and Tallecao, one each.

In the contest against Central Falls, the Lady Cougars were totally dominant and blasted their way to an 8-0 lead at half, and then coasted to the win.

Africo and Capraro each had a pair of goals, and adding single scores were Ashley VanBemmelen, Threshler, Andrea Matarese, Jordan Smith and Kayla Prior. Tallecao had three assists, and Threshler, two.

The team was scheduled to host Middletown this week before visiting Johnston on Saturday for a non-league contest.
