Man attempts to lure Woonsocket students; parents warned

WOONSOCKET - Police are warning parents that a unidentified man has been approaching Woonsocket school children.

A middle school girl walking to her bus stop on Park Avenue Thursday morning, Sept. 26, was approached by a man described as tan and heavy-set with white hair and a mustache. The girl said the man had a New York accent and was driving a maroon work van with a silver ladder on top and a dent in the driver's side door. The man reportedly asked the girl if she wanted to go with him, and she ran away.

On Friday, police say there was a similar incident on upper Park Avenue around 8 a.m. They are unsure if the events are related, and have not yet released details of the second incident, which is still under investigation.

The Woonsocket School Department has advised parents to talk to their children, and to have students walk in groups whenever possible.

Extra officers are on patrol and residents have been asked to report any suspicious activity to the police tip line at 401-769-4444.
