Field delays send Clippers football out of town Saturday

CUMBERLAND - A downpour Friday morning was the last straw for the contractor attempting to finish up installing the new artificial turf at Tucker Field.

Around noontime, organizers gave up and began searching out an alternate site for Saturday's football game against St. Raphael Academy.

And all the ribbon-cutting hoopla was rescheduled for Oct. 18 when the Clppers will play the team from Mount Hope High School in a non-divisional face-off.

The last-minute change was disappointing for Town Council member Bill Murray who said "there's no way we're taking any kind of gamble" with the installation process.

Until this weekend, good weather had kept the $1 million project on time, as the high school and local sports team got ready to celebrate a virtually maintenance-free playing surface that sparkles with a giant blue C.
