Mrs. Delgado was apparently out for a walk

CUMBERLAND – Cumberland Police are identifying the elderly pedestrian who died Thursday as 78-year-old Aida Delgado of Valley Falls.

Mrs. Delgado was apparently out for a walk at 6 a.m. Thursday when she was struck by the driver of a Bliss dairy truck while crossing Dexter Street, west of the High Street intersection, according to Deputy Chief George Stansfield.

She had been transported to Rhode Island Hospital following the early morning incident and died around 11 a.m.

The truck driver, Robert Zollo of East Providence resident, had stopped and is cooperating with police who are reconstructing the accident scene. Stansfield said Friday the driver had not been charged, though the investigation was continuing.

Stansfield said the dim light of the early morning may have been factor in the tragedy. Alcohol had been ruled out, he said.
