Belknap drops out of Woonsocket City Council race

WOONSOCKET – One of the 15 candidates for Woonsocket's seven-member City Council has withdrawn his name from the race, making the primary for that board, to be held Tuesday, Oct. 8, ultimately meaningless.

Jeffrey Belknap filed a letter of withdrawal with the Board of Canvassers this week, too late to have his name removed from the ballot. Regardless of the outcome of the election, Belknap will not run in the Nov. 5 General Election.

The primary will help the 14 remaining candidates gauge their likeliness winning a seat on the board, but no one will be eliminated from the race. The remaining candidates are: Christopher Beauchamp, Albert Brien, Eric Cartier, Marc Dubois, Kathryn Dumais, Richard Fagnant, Daniel Gendron, Roger Jalette, Garrett Mancieri, Anita McGuire-Forcier, Robert Moreau, Melissa Murray, Christopher Roberts and John Ward.

The primary will narrow the field of mayoral candidates from four to two. Rep. Lisa Baldelli-Hunt, David Fisher and Michael Moniz have challenged Mayor Leo Fontaine for the position.
