Athena's brings bra collection effort to Autumnfest

WOONSOCKET - With only 59,000 bras standing between them and an entry in The Guinness Book of World Records, employees from Athena's Home Novelties have upped their game, taking their bra collection effort to the city's largest annual fall event.

The company will have a booth at Autumnfest at World War II Memorial Park on Oct. 12, 13 and 14, where a chain of the intimate contributions will be hooked together and wrapped around a camper.

The Woonsocket-based company is collecting bras for the Athena's Cup, a breast cancer charity and awareness effort through which organizers aim to break the world record by hooking together more than 169,000 bras. To date, Athena's Cup has collected over 110,000 bras toward their hooked bra chain, and plans to break the record in 2014.

"We want people to bring bras to Autumnfest and hook them to the chain around the camper to be part of history," said Athena's founder Jennifer Jolicoeur.

Anyone who donates new or lightly used bra, along with a $5 donation to go towards breast cancer research, will receive a pink button proclaiming their status as a "Proud Hooker."

To add to the festivities, attendees are invited to be photographed in front of a celebrity signed bra and tribute decorated bra display. All photos will be posted on the Athena's Cup facebook page. Participants are encouraged to visit the page and tag personal photos as they get uploaded to the page at the end of each day.

The Athena's Home Novelties line of spa and beauty products will also be on display and for sale at the booth.
