Coderre, Goldin recognized as 'Angels of Adoption'

State Rep. Elaine Coderre, of District 60 in Pawtucket, and state Sen. Gayle Goldin, of District 3 in Providence, were nationally recognized as "Angels in Adoption" for their sponsorship of a new state law that will help caregivers, including parents of newly adopted children, to take time out of work to care for loved ones.

The Angels in Adoption award, given by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, recognizes individuals, couples and organizations who have made an extraordinary contribution to children in need of homes. U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S. Rep. David Cicilline nominated Goldin and Coderre for the award, presented at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Goldin and Coderre this year sponsored legislation that expanded Rhode Island's Temporary Disability Insurance program as many as four weeks of wage replacement for workers who take time off to care for a seriously ill child, spouse, domestic partner, parent, parent-in-law or grandparent or to bond with a new child, whether through birth, adoption or foster care. The new benefit will be available Jan. 1.
