District 3 School Committee members announce toy drive

NORTH PROVIDENCE - Two local School Committee members, Steven Andreozzi and Stephen Palmieri, announced that they'll run a toy drive to benefit children of the District 3 they represent.

Although it's their first effort, the school board members say they have a goal of collecting as many new unwrapped toys for children age 5-12 as possible.

Toys can be dropped off any time at D. Palmieri's Bakery, 624 Killingly St. in Johnston, or at the pair's toy drive event planned for Dec. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lymansville VFW Post, 354 Fruit Hill Ave. A free hot buffet will be offered Dec. 9 at the Lymansville VFW. Though there is no cost, Palmieri and Andreozzi are asking that everyone bring a toy or other gift.

The toy drive will culminate with the arrival of Santa, who will help distribute the toys on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 10 a.m.

Palmieri said Monday that Andreozzi and his wife Joanne recently brought up the idea of establishing a toy drive and he thought it was a great idea. He doesn't know of school board members elsewhere doing something like this, said Palmieri, but he "just wanted to do something positive for the kids."

"There is no hidden agenda other than trying to bring something positive amidst the craziness of life," he said. "Maybe for a couple of hours people can enjoy themselves and not dwell on negativity."
