State cross country champs crowned

EAST GREENWICH - Cole Middle School of East Greenwich won the boys title, and Barrington Middle School took the girls crown at the annual middle school state championship cross country meet Saturday at Goddard Memorial State Park.

North Cumberland runners placed second in both the boys and girls races, but coach Kerrie Carpenter's winning streak continued when her Jayvee girls easily outdistanced the competition to win on that level. It was the eighth time in as many years that Carpenter has returned from the state meet with either an individual or team champion.

It was a strong day for North Cumberland runners as they picked up second place in three of the four races and won the other.

Sam Toolin of Wickford Middle School was the individual winner of the boys' race, completing the 1.8-mile course in 10:34.

Cole ran away with the team title with 28 points. Westerly Middle School's Randi Burr was the individual winner in the girls Varsity race, churning out a time of 11:30.

But it was Barrington that showed the most balance, taking the team title with a score of 53, followed by North Cumberland, 73; Cole, 82; Westerly, 143; Wickford, 194; Davisville, 210; Curtis Corner, 273; Burrillville, 300; Riverside, 301; Narragansett, 302; Lincoln, 323; Gallagher, 324; McCourt, 408; Jamestown, 412; Gaudet, 425; Ponaganset, 430; North Smithfield, 454; Kickemuit, 493; Portsmouth, 525; Chariho, 551; Ricci, 603; Deering, 637; Thompson, 645; Scituate, 679; Tiverton, 691; Gordon, 711; Martin, 766; Mount St. Charles, 781; Bay View, 785; Goff, 865, and Birchwood, 880.

In the Junior Varsity race, North Cumberland won with 34 points, followed by Cole, 50; Barrington, 100; Davisville, 105, and Curtis Corner, 123.

Casey Farrell of NCMS was the individual winner, and other members of the state championship team are Colby Chelo, who finished second; Sarah Keough, seventh; Katie Coughlin, 11th and Jordyn Platt, 13th.

There were just over 1,200 student-athletes participating in the four races.
