Season ends for NPHS soccer girls

NORTH PROVIDENCE - The season concluded for the North Providence High School girls soccer team last week when it dropped a 4-2 shoot-out decision to St. Raphael Academy.

The Lady Cougars entered the game on somewhat of a streak and did not lose once in its last six games, putting together a 2-0-4 record during that stretch, including a 2-2 tie against St. Raphael..

St. Raphael's was 3-7-4 during Division III regular season play and entered the game as the number 10 seed, while the Lady Cougars went 5-5-2 and were seeded seventh.

Rachel Ramos gave North Providence a 1-0 lead in the first half on a corner kick, but the Saints tied it when Emma Mendes flipped one in.

Early in the second half, Madison Jamack scored to give North Providence the lead, but St. Raphael tallied with about five minutes remaining.

That's the way it remained through regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtime sessions, when the outcome was decided by penalty kicks.

Ariana Africo and Danya Grimaldi scored for North Providence during the shoot out.
