North Stars Pee Wee Selects win pair

WOONSOCKET - The Woonsocket North Stars Apollo Roofing Selects Pee Wee Majors team recorded victories over the Providence Jr. Friars and Top Gun Hockey over the weekend.

On Saturday, the North Stars faced the Friars at Providence College's Schneider Arena. After a scoreless first period, the North Stars got on the board six minutes into the second period when Douglas Newton scored off a great pass from Sam Juntunen.

The Friars tied the score at 1-1 with eight minutes to go in the second period, and then took the lead when they scored seven minutes into the third period.

But Sam Chase scored a spectacular unassisted goal just 24 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2, and then Colby Acciardo scored what would be the game-winning third North Star goal, assisted by Katielyn Mastroianni and Juntunen, with 2:25 left in the game.

When the Friars pulled their goalie for the last minute of the game, the North Stars capitalized on that opportunity, with Newton and Mastroianni getting empty net goals 20 seconds apart, to bring the final score to 5-2 North Stars.

North Stars goalie A.J. Bruscini had a great game stopping 21 shots.

On Sunday, the North Stars hosted Top Gun Hockey at Mount St. Charles Academy's Adelard Arena, and dominated with a 13-1 win. Top Gun drew first blood, scoring six minutes into the first period when a rebound bounced backwards into the net. After that it was all North Stars. Jack Walsh started the scoring for the North Stars, with one of his two goals in the game, when he completed a perfectly executed set of passes from Newton and Acciardo nine minutes into the first period to tie the score at 1-1. Newton scored his first of two goals a minute later, giving the North Stars a 2-1 lead, when Elise Curren sent him a great pass from the point.

Curren picked up five assists in the game, with Walsh and Newton each getting three assists.

Andrew Goyette added a third North Star goal a minute after that, assisted by Aidan Flynn and Chase, to put the North Stars up 3-1 at the end of the first period.

The North Stars added five goals in the second period and five more in the third period, scored by Nick Curran, Stephen Ciolino, Kyle Robitaille, Acciardo, Juntunen, as well as three goals from Jackson Shevlin to earn a hat trick.

Solid defense from Holly Pashnik and Ian Schermerhorn was critical to the win, along with rock solid goaltending from Bruscini who made 14 saves. The North Stars outshot Top Gun 29-15.
