Smithfield Little League leaders have an admiring mom

The following letter was sent by a Smithfield mother to her friends about her son and his Little League fall ball game. It is reprinted with her permission.

I just wanted to write a quick note regarding last night's nail bitter of a game. First I would like to thank Coach Shane for being such a good influence on our kids and letting them experience different positions and never giving up on them.

As soon as (my son) Nick got in the car last night, he turned to me and said, "Mom, you know all those times I am in the backyard throwing the ball around?

Tonight is what I always daydream of... being in the last inning with two outs, three balls, two strikes and the game depends on me... all the players are looking towards me... and I strike the batter out!

Tonight was a dream come true!"

I went in his room later that night to shut off his light. He was fast asleep clutching the game ball.

I think that we sometimes get bogged down and frustrated with the politics of the game and the league, but coaches like Shane, his assistant coaches and Bob Bowker represent what is good in the league.

They give our boys opportunities to shine, they build their confidence, and teach them to lose with grace. They also teach them how to respect the game, their teammates and the umpires.

These are lessons that they will carry with them throughout their lives.

I just want to say thank you for all you do and to let you know the impact that you have on their lives.

A very grateful mother...
