Buy a feather, help feed a family

NORTH PROVIDENCE - Members of the North Providence Youth Commission have launched "A Feather Feeds a Family," an initiative designed to help feed needy families during the upcoming holiday season.

Organizers are seeking contributions of $5 in exchange for a paper feather, which will be distributed this Friday, Nov. 15. Organizations and businesses are being asked to sponsor a "dress-down day" sometime next week, Nov. 18-22. The $5 to dress casually would go toward feathers.

Participants are asked to write something they're grateful for on the feathers, according to Danielle Carey, chairwoman of the Youth Commission. On Friday, Nov. 22, members of the Youth Commission will come back to pick up the feathers, which will be used to create a large feather display at North Providence Town Hall.

Jeannie Vickers, acting recreation director for the town, said that members of the Youth Commission will take all money collected and use it to "go food shopping" to fill food baskets.

Youth Commission members will be visiting many local businesses to drop off feathers and seek donations but are asking anyone interested in participating to contact Vickers by calling 401-349-5625 or emailing
