Turkey Trot run/walk planned for Thanksgiving Day

PAWTUCKET - On Thursday morning, Nov. 28, at 10 a.m., more than 1,200 runners and walkers are expected to line up on Roosevelt Avenue in front of Pawtucket City Hall for the third annual Rhode Island Family Turkey Trot 5K run/walk.

There will also be a run for children starting at 9:30 a.m. The Rhode Island Family Turkey Trot offers families an opportunity to unite and to do something together as a family before the family Thanksgiving meal, according to a news release.

The 5K will route will take runners and walkers along Roosevelt Avenue and Walcott Street to McCoy Stadium, and then the course will make a loop before returning along Walcott Street to City Hall. The complete route is posted at www.familyturkeytrot.com .

Thanksgiving Day is the busiest road racing day in the U.S., with New England as the number one location for "turkey trots," according to event organizers.

The first 1,000 runners will receive a custom long-sleeve technical T-shirt. After the run/walk there will be a post-race party at Murphy's Law at 2 George St., starting at 11 a.m. Entertainment will be provided by the Tom Lanigan Band.

This year's event will be supporting the Pawtucket Soup Kitchen and donations will be accepted online. Workers will be collecting food donations for the Pawtucket Soup Kitchen.

Registration is available online at www.familyturkeytrot.com and will also be available the day of the event. The Blackstone Valley Visitor Center at 175 Main St. will be available to participants on race morning.
