Robert W. Sumner-Mack - Hilo, Hawaii

Robert Whitcomb Sumner-Mack, 78, of Hilo, Hawaii, a former Cumberland resident, died Dec. 11, 2013, at Hilo Medical Center.

Born in Richmond, Va., Sumner-Mack studied pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania and earned a Masters of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. He taught nutrition and public health at Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, and at the University of Pennsylvania; was district health officer for the Big Island in the 1980s; and directed health projects in Africa and Asia for USAID, UNDP, and the World Bank before retiring in 1997.

He was a Master Gardener and member of Big Island Bee Association and the Hawaii Concert Society, among other organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Nan McCowan Sumner-Mack of Hilo; daughters, Laura Kirsten Mack and Danielle Prudhon Mack (Chris) Francis of Philadelphia; and stepson, Drew Vaughan (Dottie Marie) Sumner of San Diego. His sister, Patricia (Charles) Churchman lives in Virginia. He left four grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

No formal services are planned. Memorial gifts may be made to Community MusicWorks in Providence, R.I., or to the Sean Sumner Memorial Fund at Orwig Music Library at Brown University.
