'Power of One' campaign to fight hunger now in gear

PAWTUCKET - Through Feb. 14, the Pawtucket Backpackers organization is hosting a fundraiser called "The Power of 1 - A Caring Community" to raise funds for hungry students in the local school district.

"We are asking each of our students, staff, family and caring friends to contribute $1 to our cause to help sustain the program," said organizer Joanne Bonollo. "One dollar will make a difference. If everyone who cares contributes, we will be able to sustain the Pawtucket Backpackers through this school year and provide a base for the following school year."

The Pawtucket Backpackers is discreet and anonymous, according to Bonollo. Volunteers do not know who the bags go to, as a representative in each school handles the distribution.

Donations can be dropped off at the office of any Pawtucket school. Just tell staff it is for the Backpackers or mail a contribution to Pawtucket Backpackers, 286 Main St., Pawtucket, RI 02860.

The Pawtucket Backpackers is a non-profit 501(c)(3) in cooperation with the Back to School Celebration of R.I. All contributions are tax deductible. Direct questions, comments or concerns by email to bonolloj@verizon.net.
