Joint meeting of school board, Town Council Feb. 4

CUMBERLAND – School Committee Chairwoman Lisa Beaulieu announced Friday that members of her board and the Town Council will meet Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cumberland High School Transitional Building "cafetorium" to continue a discussion begun last October about shared services, improved efficiencies, and long range planning.

The meeting is set about a week before one announced in January by Mayor Daniel McKee who is calling on residents to join him on Wednesday evening, Feb. 12, for a discussion about making public schools more efficient while broadening their collaboration with local organizations.

According to Beaulieu, the Feb. 4 meeting will see the town's elected officials will "discuss the per pupil funding formula, explore ways to share services and eliminate unnecessary duplication of services, and ideally, streamlining the process."

Also on the agenda is "a discussion on long range planning, the divide between charter schools and public schools, and the willingness of taxpayers to invest in improved educational services," she said.

The meeting is open to the public and all of the town’s elected officials are invited and encouraged to attend and participate.

Said Beaulieu, “This is perhaps one of the more important discussions we as elected leaders of our town can have. Collaboration and working for the common good is what our constituents expect from us. This is an opportunity for us to answer that call.”
