Part-time hires save town $20,000

NORTH PROVIDENCE - Cumberland's Director of Planning and Community Development Kelley Morris will be traveling to North Providence on a part-time basis to consult on zoning issues as that town reorganizes its Planning Department to replace one full-time director with two part-timers.

Morris, an attorney, is joining David Wescott there, who has been named director of the department.

Mayor Daniel McKee said he had agreed when Morris was hired in Cumberland that she would work 32 hours a week to allow her time to take on outside part-time positions that utilize her background in the law.

Westcott is a sixth-generation North Providence resident who has been involved with consulting around the state, including Cumberland's Comprehensive Plan when it was last updated.

He was tapped by Mayor Charles Lombardi to replace the retired Ed Civito on a part-time basis with Morris.

Both he and Morris will receive stipends of $2,000 a month and no benefits.

Morris is earning $75,000 in Cumberland. Also in her department is a full-time planner, Joshua O'Neill, a part-time planner, Gerhard Leib, and a clerk, Celeste Beauparlant.
