CUMBERLAND - Serving sushi, hibachi and Asian fusion cuisine, Asahi Asian Restaurant & Bar has opened at 356 Mendon Road.

The eatery owned by chef Sam Tai got its start Jan. 10 in the location occupied by Royal Panda for years before becoming Fuleen Seafood Restaurant in September 2011, and Golden Ginger in July 2012.

Tai and sushi chef Ronald Zheng have both previously worked at Osaka Japanese Sushi & Steakhouse in Boston and Aji Sushi in New York City. This is Tai's first business.

Some rolls have been named with Rhode Island in mind, including the Cumberland, with tuna, salmon and yellow tail, and the I-95, which features tuna tempura, spicy tuna and salmon.

In addition to dining in the restaurant or bar, customers can also order take-out, catering and delivery.

The restaurant is offering a special through March 10 for 15 percent off all orders of $30 or more. A Valentine's Day special will be offered Feb. 14 for $59.99, which includes dinner and drinks for two.

Asahi is open for dining Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m. The bar is open Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.
