PAWTUCKET - A new after-school cooking class has grown extremely popular among students at Slater Middle School, who are gaining culinary skills to benefit them for a lifetime, according to those running the program.

Julissa Polanco, a school volunteer program coordinator for AmeriCorps VISTA, said there is always a mad rush to sign up for the class, which is offered every other Wednesday by culinary students from Johnson & Wales University.

What started out as an idea for a fun program to give students something constructive to do after school has turned into a vital part of the educational process at Slater, said Polanco, as students are getting inspired to learn through doing something they enjoy.
