Lincoln keeps February, April school vacations intact

LINCOLN - The Lincoln School Committee has decided that its schools will continue to offer both February and April vacations, at least for the next year.

Members approved the 2014-2015 school calendar proposed by Supt. Georgia Fortunato at a School Committee meeting March 10.

Fortunato told those in attendance that discussions have been ongoing throughout the state to decide whether to stick to the two-week system or find an alternative that reduces the number of vacation days.

Cumberland schools changed up their vacation dates this year, keeping April vacation and giving students a long weekend off in February instead of a full week.

That district's adopted calendar for the 2014-2015 year again includes a break for students on the Monday and Tuesday after Presidents Day, though teachers report Tuesday for professional development, and a full week off starting April 20.

Fortunato said she thinks the issue should be decided at the state level to accommodate families who work and live in different districts.

"It really needs to be a statewide initiative," she said, adding that she and other superintendents are committed to discussion.

Until then, Lincoln students and teachers will have a break next year from Feb. 16 to 20, and from April 20 to 24. The holiday recess will start Dec. 24, with students returning to class Jan. 5, as Jan. 1 and 2 are a Thursday and Friday.

The first day of school for students in kindergarten through grade 9 is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 25. Students in all grades will report the following day, Tuesday, Aug. 26.

The last day of school is currently scheduled for June 12, or the 182nd day. Make-up days have been scheduled for June 15-19, if needed.

Professional development days have been scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 20, and Tuesday, Sept. 9, when students will not have class because of the primary elections.
