Penguin swimmers make a splash at RIMA championships

CUMBERLAND - Despite having the minimal numbers of swimmers this season, an outstanding group came together and had a strong showing at the RIMA championships this month at Roger Williams University.

Swimmers began their season in September, and even an unexpected a six-week pool shutdown couldn't stop them from making remarkable gains in and out of the pool. The team competed in a number of RIMA dual league swim meets RIMA All Stars are recognized through the RIMA swim league as the top five finishers in each event.

Earning that distinction from the Penguins were Alli Melnychuk, Danielle Jorge, Emily Jacobson, Katie Nolan, Lilly Jacobson, Meredith Adler, Molly Mohrhardt and Thalia Puccio.

During the RIMA championships, Meredith Adler took fourth in the 100-yard individual medley, eighth in the 50-yard freestyle and sixth in the 50-yard breaststroke; Emily Jacobson placed seventh in the 100-yard freestyle, 11th in the 100-yard backstroke and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly; and Lillian Jacobson took fourth place in the 50-yard freestyle, fourth in the 50-yard breaststroke and fourth in the 50-yard backstroke.

Danielle Jorge grabbed sixth place in the 200-yard individual medley, eighth in the 100-yard freestyle and fifth in the 100-yard backstroke, and Natalie Jorge was eighth in the 100-yard individual medley, ninth in the 50-yard freestyle and 11th in the 50-yard breaststroke.

Nathan Leonard was seventh in the 25-yard freestyle, sixth in the 25-yard breaststroke, and seventh in the 25-yard backstroke; Allison Melnychuk was fifth in the 100-yard individual medley, second in the 50-yard breaststroke and 11th in the 50-yard butterfly; Molly Mohrhardt was fourth in the 200-yard individual medley, 11th in the 100-yard freestyle, and ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke; Katie Nolan was second in the 100-yard individual medley, second in the 50-yard freestyle and second in the 50-yard butterfly, and Thalia Puccio placed ninth in the 200-yard individual medley, ninth in the 50-yard freestyle and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly.
