North Stars Mite A Selects advance in EMHL playoffs

WOONSOCKET - The Woonsocket North Stars Mite A Select squad began its quest for an EMHL championship by participating in a round-robin play-in at Enfield, Conn., winning two of three games.

The North Stars took on the New England Junior Flyers, the host team,¬?on Saturday and came away with a 5-3 victory.

Tommy Balducci scored four of the five goals, including the go-ahead¬?marker with four minutes remaining. He also¬?tallied an empty net goal in the final minute.

Cole Vieira scored the team's other goal and added an assist. Jack LaRose had two assists. Jacob Stifel and Logan Whitton each had assists.

The defensive corps of¬?Derrick Wood, Christian Vieira, Nick Smith, Phil Barrett and Liam Keating protected the lead late to ensure victory.¬?Ian Pomfret was solid down the stretch and made 16 saves.

On Sunday, the team dropped a 6-3 decision to Bay State Wave, falling behind 6-0, and were never able to recover.

The North Stars bounced back from the loss, and after a slow start in their third game, rallied to take an 8-5 decision over the Junior Bull Dogs White club of North Billerica, Mass.

Balducci and Viera each contributed hat tricks.

LaRose tallied four assists. Stifel¬?had a two-point game with a nifty goal and an assist, and Whitton scored his first of the tournament. Owen Leighton had an assist.

Sean Taylor consistently carried the play on his wing all weekend.

Billy Connell was exceptional as his two-way play and passing prowess were noted. Gavyn Freiberger was relentless in the offensive zone.

With two victories in three games, the North¬?Stars qualified for the EMHL semifinals, which take place Sunday in Marlboro, Mass., at the New England Sports Center.
