Thrifty, Walker's advance to finals

BLACKSTONE - It will be Thrifty Discount Liquor and Walker's Pub battling in a best-of-three series to determine this year's Blackstone Masters Basketball League champion.

During action Friday night at the Blackstone Valley Boys & Girls Club, Walker's eliminated last year's champion, Ciro's Tavern, 72-55, and Thrifty ended the season for Polish Club, 54-45.

Walker's came out firing and nailed eight three-pointers in the first half, five of them coming from a hot-handed Keith Ducharme. Walker's took a 36-25 lead going into the half and kept the pressure on throughout the second half, scoring another 36 points.

Bobby McDonald hit a pair of threes for Ciro's in the third quarter to close the gap to eight, but that just fueled the fire of Walker's, which went on a 10-0 run led by Paul Silva, who hit four buckets in a row, and Peter Landry contributed to the run with a couple of baskets. Silva scored 15 points in the second half.

Dan Belisle went on a run for Ciro's scoring 12 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to overcome the lead. Ducharme led the way for Walker's with 23 points, including six treys. Silva had 20, and Paul Peri and Rob Dirks chipped in with 10 each.

Belisle lead Ciro's with 21 points followed by McDonald with 13 and Scott Robillard with 10.

Thrifty Discount Liquor defeated The Polish Club also to advance to the finals. It was a close battle throughout the game with Thrifty taking a slight 24-21 half-time lead. In the third quarter the game stayed close with both teams trading hoops.

Then Jeff Brooks got hot in the paint and scored three quick buckets for Thrifty, giving them a 10-point lead. Andy Nolan hit a three and a lay-up for Polish Club to cut the lead to five.

But Dennis Kafalas hit a big three for Thrifty to put his team up by eight. Polish Club was forced to foul and Thrifty players nailed seven of 11 from the charity stripe to pull out the win.

Peter DiCecco hit two of three and Dan Kafalas hit two of two in the last 30 seconds to seal the deal for the victory. The father-son team of Kafalas combined to score 26 points for Thrifty. Son Dan had 16 and father Dennis had 10. Brooks also chipped in 14 for Thrifty.

Chris Jacobs led the way for Polish Club with 14 points, followed by Nolan with 12, Lucas Giguere had 10 and Jeff Fontaine chipped in with eight.

This year the Masters League had a small fundraiser for the Blackstone Valley Boys & Girls Club. When a player missed a freethrow, they contributed a nickle to the cause. When a player made a free throw, 10 cents was contributed.

Referee Dick Landry matched a round and this week the league gave a check for more than $200 to the Boys & Girls Club.
