Official: Former Gold's Gym to be a Deals store

PAWTUCKET - A long-vacant building that previously housed Gold's Gym at 603 Pawtucket Ave. will soon be a Deals store, according to city officials.

A certificate of zoning compliance was issued on Feb. 7 for the 13,000-square-foot facility, according to Dylan Zelazo, spokesman for Mayor Donald Grebien.

Deals is part of the Dollar Tree family of stores, which has a number of locations in the area. The new store is located just up the road from the current Gold's Gym at 550 Pawtucket Ave., right near the Providence line.

Deals differs from a typical dollar store in that it offers many products in the $2-$5 range. According to the company website, , the store has low prices on "everyday essentials, party, seasonal, and home products that make it easy for you to manage the family budget without sacrificing the fun side of life."

A worker with North Providence-based RD Angell Masonry said the building should be done sometime in April and then representatives from Dollar Tree can prepare the inside for opening.

The owner of the old Gold's Gym building is listed as Meeting Street Associates. The property at 609 Pawtucket Ave. is currently assessed at $504,600, with the 1925 building accounting for $275,300 of that.
