Slater teacher charged in attack of student

PAWTUCKET – On March 19, the Pawtucket Police Department was alerted to an incident that had occurred a day before at Slater Jr. High School. A parent of a student told the reporting officer that her 13-year-old son had been assaulted by a school teacher. The allegations were that the teacher approached the student, grabbed him, lifted him off of the floor and pinned him against a wall and was yelling at the student.

The teacher was identified as Richard Koster, age 49, of 142 Warren Ave. in Cranston.

The March 18 incident came after Koster caught the student eating a cookie in class. According to police, another student told Koster that the youth had made a face after Koster told that eating in class was against the rules.

Pawtucket Police detectives began an investigation and gathered enough evidence to arrest Koster. He turned himself in on Thursday, March 27, at the Pawtucket Police Department. He was accompanied by his attorney. Koster appeared in District Court where he was charged with simple assault. He was released on $1,000 personal recognizance after arraignment.
