Slater Mill hosts Aurea Ensemble for 'Music Mondays'

PAWTUCKET - Rhode Island's Aurea Ensemble will present a series of three Monday evenings of melded chamber music and readings in Slater Mill's second floor arts studio, 67 Roosevelt Ave., this spring on April 7, May 19, and June 2.

"Music Mondays" will include a post performance reception and conversation with the artists. Aurea artistic director and founding member Consuelo Sherba will be joined by founding members Chris Turner and Nigel Gore, as well as Katherine Winterstein and Emmanuel Feldman.

On April 7, Melville and the Great White Whale fuses passages from "Moby-Dick" and Melville's letters to Nathaniel Hawthorne with string quartets of Beethoven and Webern, and sea shanties and improvisations of Chris Turner.

Darwin at Sea will be featured on May 19, when Darwin's life and creative process will be the focus of the performance, which will include readings from Darwin's letters, excerpts from "The Voyage of the Beagle," poetry of Milton and Coleridge, with music of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Philip Glass and Chris Turner.

On June 2, Rhapsody on a Windy Night will feature poetry by T.S. Eliot, Baudelaire, Verlaine and Rimbaud, as well as music by Debussy, Faure, Stravinsky, Britten and the premiere of a newly commissioned work for Aurea by composer Elaine Aberdam.
