Youth fishing tourney planned

WOONSOCKET - The third annual Ernest A. Carignan Jr. Memorial Youth Fishing Tournament will take place on Saturday, April 12, opening day for fishing season, at Cass Park pond.

The tournament, which has taken place for decades, is now named in honor of Carignan, who ran the event for many years. It is sponsored by the Woonsocket Lodge of Elks and the Recreation Department.

The tourney is for boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 12 and begins at 6 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m., when prizes will be awarded for the biggest fish caught and heaviest string of five fish.

The state Department of Environmental Management will stock the pond with brown and rainbow trout prior to the tournament.

Free refreshments will be provided by the Elks Club and the Italian Workingmen's Club. There is no cost, and registration can be completed at Pete's Bait and Tackle on Burnside Avenue, or at the Recreation Department on River Street. Registration will also be accepted the day of the event.
