McManus takes over as recycling coordinator

SMITHFIELD - The town's new recycling coordinator is Maureen McManus, a former employee of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and a native of Lincoln.

McManus, a graduate of Northeastern and Antioch Universities, and a 2002 graduate of Lincoln High School, took over her part-time position here March 1.

She succeeds Lori Gagnon, who resigned in January after holding the job since 2010.

McManus said her immediate goals are to increase the town's recycling tonnage and to help with the new automatic refuse pickup system that Smithfield launched in October.

McManus, 30, said one of the attractions of the local job was the opportunity it gave her to return to Rhode Island.

In a sure sign of impending spring, McManus announced that yard waste pickups will resume April 7, weekly at first on the usual routes and every other week after May 31 until resuming weekly for fall cleanups Nov. 3.

McManus announced several impending events, including the annual Earth Day community cleanup from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 19.

Volunteers will meet at the Leo Bouchard Conservation Center, 5 Waterview Dr. (off Pleasant View Avenue behind the police station), where they will be issued gloves, bags, and water bottles before fanning out to cleanup locations around town.

A collection of electronics castoffs will take place at the Public Works garage, 3 Spragueville Rd., off Pleasant View Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 25.

Acceptable items include small appliances, televisions, cell phones and computer-related material.

The event is held in cooperation with Goodwill Industries of Rhode Island, a nonprofit charity that refurbishes the used electronics.

Document shredding will be offered at the garage from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 26, with residents permitted a maximum of four boxfuls of paper.

On May 17 the department will accept tires, without rims, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The tires will eventually be recycled into other products.
