Route 146 re-striping planned for summer

NORTH SMITHFIELD - Town Administrator Paulette Hamilton has announced last week that several roads in town will be updated through a restriping project scheduled to start this summer.

Additional striping will be added on Route 146 South approaching I-295 to assist in preventing confusion about which lanes to use when exiting Reservoir Road, according to a press release.

New striping will also provide more visible traffic paths on Route 146 North and Route 146A, the release states.

The planned upgrades come after Hamilton, North Smithfield Police Department, Rhode Island Department of Transportation engineers and the Rhode Island State Police reviewed a Road Safety Audit, conducted by RIDOT engineers and NSPD, that evaluated traffic during peak travel times in the morning and afternoon.

Hamilton's press release states that the improvements will be done without widening roads so as to limit the impact on drivers. According to RIDOT, signs will be mounted from the Lincoln town line to Route 146A to warn drivers about the potential for stopped traffic during peak commuting times.

"These upgrades and safety improvements are the result of great teamwork," Hamilton said. "Our thanks to all who participated in making this happen."
