CUMBERLAND - He's a Blackstone native and grew up in Woonsocket, but Matt Lussier has settled in to the historic house at 3261 Mendon Road in Cumberland Hill, for his first barber shop. Calling it "Matt's on Mendon," Lussier's shop has been open since January.

While Lussier went to UMass Amherst for plant soil sciences and spent time as a golf course manager - "I went from cutting grass to cutting hair," he muses - he is now back to his first love of hairstyling.

He tells the story of getting a lousy haircut at age 14 when his mom encouraged him to "go ahead and do better." And so he did, on family and friends. After high school - he's a 2003 graduate of Blackstone-Millville Regional - he went to the Rob Roy Academy in Worcester to sharpen his skills, where he became licensed. In fact, he is now a master barber in the Bay State and is licensed in Rhode Island.

Matt's on Mendon offers walk-in service, and he has discounts for both senior citizens and children. Call 774-244-0311 for details. Hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
